“I really think a champion is defined not by their wins, but how they can recover when they fall”
Trampoline & DMT Squad
The lowest level that we compete outside of our own internal competition is the London Aspire Challenge Cup. This is designed for those that want to experience competing above a club competition. These are held 2-3 times a year alongside the Inter-Regional Cup and give gymnasts the opportunity to jump on the same equipment as the higher levels and get used to competition environments. We are also then able to assess them in a competition environment and look at areas to work on from either improving on a recreational level or hopefully if they want to start competing at Regional Levels.
Alongside the Aspire Cup, London also runs the Inter-Regional Challenge Cup qualifiers. This is for gymnasts competing in Level 1 through to Level 4 an opportunity to represent London in the Inter-Regional Cup Finals. This is normally the top 2 ranked across each level & age range following a final. For each level the Set Routine becomes more difficult and each squad member is required to be able to complete a minimum set of skills laid out by British Gymnastics before they can move up the levels. Both 2023 & 2024 have seen us take a record 9 members across both trampoline & DMT to represent London in the finals with Twizzlers coaches also being asked to coach Team London
Twizzlers also compete in the National Trampoline & DMT league which is held over 3 weekends. Points are awarded based on position in each event and the top 24 from across all 3 events qualify to be invited to jump in the finals. There are 4 leagues starting with League 3, League 2, League 1 & Super League. Similar to Inter-Regional each league has a minimum requirements of skills that need to be performed for the Voluntary routine with Leagues 3, 2 & 1 having a maximum tariff for the voluntary routines.
2025 will see us entering the English Trampoline & DMT Championships for the second time with both Alex & Tom representing Twizzlers for the second year, aiming yet again to qualify for a spot in the English Championships Finals.
We also have another first for Twizzlers in 2025 with entries into FIG (Federation Internationale De Gymnastique) the world governing body competitions.
What Are The Trampoline Squads?
Twizzlers doesn’t have an exact science around squads as they are all working to achieve the same goals, but due to increased numbers and to help in tracking progress Twizzlers have broken gymnasts down into 2 squads, a Pre-Squad & Squad. The expectations are the same for both but this just ensures progression skills are easily managed in the sessions. Pre-Squad are also encouraged to train with the Squad on the lead up to competitions so they get familiar with faces they will see when competing.
Both squads are still working towards the same goal and do often jump together, but mainly to assist in planning for both competitions and training, especially for any progression skills or skill focus that individuals need to move onto the next level. Pre-Squad is based around those competing in Aspire that would also like to compete at Inter-Regional and for those competing at Inter-Regional Level 1. Squad consists of those members competing at Inter-Regional Level 2 and above, Trampoline League & English Championships.
Trampoline Squad Expectation
We would like for all squads to be training between 4-6 hours a week in 2 hour sessions. This ensures that there is plenty of time for progression skills and rotations around the trampoline. This is also important leading up to any competition to ensure you are as prepared as you can be. We also look for squads to be doing floor warm ups without prompting, normally as a group before starting on the trampoline and take part in conditioning exercises at the end of the session. The Senior members of the squad will often be seen on the competition floor assisting the younger members during competitions, many of which are also qualified coaches and you will see them coaching the younger members of Twizzlers as well as supporting each other during skill sessions.
There is also an opportunity to take part in a week long August training camp in Portugal near Faro Airport in Loule. This is an invitational only camp normally for those going into or at least Year 7 with an opportunity to work with a number of international High Performance Coaches most of which can be seen alongside their own countries at world events. Many of our gymnasts have come back with new skills and experiences that would normally take much longer to prepare for at home as well as the chance to work alongside gymansts and clubs from other countries and see how they train. Our coaches also gain a lot of experience and knowledge of how to be able to carry on these skills back home to enhance their own learning.
